I have always loved showering. It's one of the best places to think, daydream and wash away the residue of whatever ails you. It was over this last year of illness that I learned the importance of exfoliating. I know there are many cultures that work this into their routines naturally, but I honestly can't remembering learning "why" it's important while growing up. Like many, I used the St. Ives Apricot Scrub because it was the 90's and magazines said it would be good for the skin. Did it feel like shards of glass on your face? Absolutely. But the truth is when we have more information, we make different choices.

Our skin is our biggest organ and it is constantly renewing itself. When I was overcome with eczema on my body this last year...and I mean, it was everywhere, I learned that when I would use my homemade sugar scrub, it would give me a little relief. The sluffing off the dead skin, with the added anchor of the moisture with its mango butter and apricot kernel oil, my skin was soothed all day long. (not to mention the temporary satisfaction of being able to safely scratch my skin with the sugar). I would double up the moisturizing with my body butter and I wouldn't itch again until the sun set. Trust me, this was a literal miracle. But like everything, we have to release the old to make way for the new to begin. This was true for me for so many reasons. Everything in our lives are mirrored. I needed to shed the old to anchor a new life in my field.

This sugar scrub actually played a large part in that process. I made my shower a ceremony. I thought about all I wanted to let go of. My grief, my illness, my old mindsets that weren't helping to anchor that new shining reality etc... It also became a ritual of honoring my body. Seeing what shape my temple was in as I was trying to rebuild it each day. Taking note of the improvements and what needed more attention. Saying "I love you" to my shoulders even if it was hard to lift my arms to wash my hair. I wanted my body to know that we were working as a team, not separately. I began to listen to it as I would attentively to a newborn baby. As most women can attest, we were not trained to do this. We have had to stuff every pain, discomfort and sadness aside to serve others. This was my end to ignoring myself. If you need that permission...it's yours. Love yourself. Tend to yourself. Make your body a temple. Our bodies miracles to be celebrated.

My sugar scrubs and butters are 100% natural without any preservatives or emulsifiers that prevent most body butters from melting in warm climates. I will be shipping my butters and scrubs with ice, but be aware that these need to stay out of hot sun. If your butter happens to accidentally melt in your car, this is easily fixed! Just chill the butter in the fridge for about 15 minutes and then scoop it out and whip it with a beater or kitchen aid mixer until it fluffs up again. It will be as good as new. The same mechanism is used for melted sugar scrubs as well.

Ingredients: fine sugar, mango butter, apricot seed oil, borage, citrus peel, madagascar vanilla bean, Orange EO, Bergamot EO.
